Coggins Testing

Texas state law requires all equine have an annual Coggins test to screen for Equine Infectious Anemia. Buna Equine Lab is located within Buna Animal Hospital and can provide same day or next day test results in most cases. There are two types of nationally approved Coggins tests, one of which can provide same-day results. Holidays may delay the availability of your test results, so please call ahead to arrange your test. The lab is very busy in the spring during festival/parade & trail ride season, so please plan ahead. In addition to a Coggins test, horses traveling out of state (and some intrastate travel for exhibition) are required to have a valid health certificate stating the horse has been examined by a licensed veterinarian and found free of disease prior to travel. These certificates require a physical examination of the horse on the date it is signed. Please plan ahead if you are scheduling out of state travel. We want you to have a safe and enjoyable trip with your horse. Our lab schedule is as follows:

AGID Coggins Test

Blood samples are collected during the business day and tests are done in batches at the end of each day. The test results must be read 24 to 48 hours after the test is set up. They cannot be read prior to 24 hours so this is considered a “next day” test. The lab follows our office schedule.

  • If the sample is collected on a Monday, results will be available after 9 am Wednesday. (office closed Tues)
  • If the sample is collected on a Wednesday, results will be available after 4:45 pm Thursday.
  • If the sample is collected on a Thursday, results will be available after 4:45 pm Friday.
  • If a sample is collected on a Friday or Saturday, results will be ready after 9 am Monday. (office closes at noon Sat before Fri tests are available)
ELISA Coggins Test

Blood samples are collected and after the blood has been allowed to clot, the test can be performed. Including clotting time, the test usually takes 2 to 4 hours. The ELISA test reagents cost more than the AGID and the test itself is more labor intensive, so “same-day” ELISA results do cost more than the “next day” AGID test. If the blood sample is drawn before noon, the results can usually be provided to the owner before 5 pm.
